Introduction of Coffee in Hawaii:
Hawai’i is the only state in the United States able to grow coffee plants commercially. The first known record of coffee in Hawai'i is dated January 21, 1813, when planted coffee seedlings arrived on the island of Oahu. Later a gardener who came on HMS Blonde in 1825 under Captain Lord Byron, brought coffee plants from Brazil, and was provided land in the Mānoa Valley on O'ahu for its cultivation.
The "coffee belt" in Kona is located on the Big Island of Hawaii and is approximately two miles wide from 700 feet (210m) to 3,000 feet (914m) elevation. Other notable award winning districts on the island where coffee is grown include Kaʻū in the far south and Puna in the southeast.
Although coffee can be harvested year-round in Hawaii, highest production begins in late summer and extends to early spring. A total of about 7,800 acres are planted with coffee throughout the state. A little over half the acreage is outside the island of Hawaii, in particular on the island of Kauai, indicating that farms on other islands are larger in average size compared to those on the island of Hawaii.
